A man of our times

Sad to hear of the death of Freddie Marsden age 66 who died of cancer on 9th Dec. Freddie was the drummer in the band when it formed in 1962 and will be remebered as one of a group who's first three songs made number one. I am sure we all remeber "I like it" "Ferry cross the Mersey" and "You'll never walk alone."

In case you are shouting "Ferry cross the Mersey" was not a number one Paul, you are right, it only made No 8 on 17th Dec 1964. The three consectutive No ones were "How do you do it" - 14 March 1963, "I like it" 30th May 1963 and "You'll never walk alone" 10th October 1963.

That's sad news. He was obviously too young to pop his clogs. I was a big fan of Gerry and the Pacemakers, and hadn't heard this news.

Freddie was the brother of Gerry if you were not aware Paul. I saw the band in Blackpool in 1964 along with Cilla Black and The Bachelors. Great times and great music. 1964 saw the Stones at the Tower ballroom, a concert I will never forget and 1965 saw me at the Cliff Richard Summer Holiday Show at the ABC. I still have the Shadow's autographs as I met them backstage. It would be interesting to hear if any of our 'bloggers'have autographs of famous people. I think my most valuable is Laurel and Hardy

Wilfred Pickles and Mabel (together with their little mongrel whose name escapes me) were the only signed photos I ever managed to obtain Norm. Must be worth a fortune today. Trouble is, nobody remembers who they were! :)

By heck...he remembers! Funnily enough, I don't recall the programme at all, but I still have a mental picture of my signed photo.

One of Wilfreds famous questions was "Now, are ye courting, luv?" Remember that? Violet Carson (Ena Sharples of Coronation St. fame) thumping out "Have a go, Joe" on her old piano? God, I must be older than all of you to remember that! Was a child at the time, though. The only celebrity autographs I have (somewhere) are Frankie Howard and the singer who toured with him in the mid 50's, sister of Lita Roza, obtained when they came to Aqaba, Jordan to entertain. Also had at one time, an old autograph book with Jim Mollison and his wife Amy's signatures. They were famous fliers in the early 30's - and no, I did not obtain them personally!! The book had been my grandparents.
